Oregon strike teams heading home from Southern California
Seventeen of Oregon’s 21 strike teams are heading home after two weeks assisting with Southern California wildfires, including the Palisades and Eaton fires, marking the largest out-of-state deployment in Oregon’s history. The remaining four teams will stay to provide support for new fire threats, with all costs reimbursed by California under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact. (Oregon State Fire Marshal)

City reports 19 million gallons of sewage spilled after West Salem pipes failed
Salem is collaborating with farmers and landowners in West Salem and Keizer to clean up after nearly 19 million gallons of sewage spilled due to two pipeline failures in late December. The city temporarily repaired the damaged pipes, which left 34,000 residents without sewer service for two days, and is assessing property damage and cleanup efforts for affected sites, with permanent repairs planned for summer. Government
The 2025 Legislative Session Begins
The Oregon legislature began its session last week in Salem, focusing on housing, aging transportation infrastructure, and wildfire funding after last year’s historic fire season. Governor Tina Kotek emphasized housing as the top priority, while lawmakers, like Rep. Pam Marsh, acknowledged the first day was low-key, setting the stage for tackling critical issues in the weeks ahead. (KOBI 5)
Salem group fights political polarization by bridging divides
The Salem chapter of Braver Angels, a volunteer-led, cross-partisan group formed last year to reduce political polarization, focuses on fostering civil discussions among people with differing viewpoints. Co-chaired by progressive Tim Buckley and conservative Satya Chandragiri, the group holds workshops and monthly "Coffee Talks" to encourage respectful dialogue, with the first event set for Jan. 24 at IKE Box.
