Minto-Brown Island Park’s Parking Lots #2 and #3 are now open following the completion of new parking surfaces. The project, which began in May 2024, is part of Salem’s 2022 Safety and Livability Bond, aimed at improving parking, ADA access, trail connections, and stormwater drainage. Final touches, including landscaping and debris removal, will be completed in the coming weeks. (City of Salem Facebook)

Six Salem-Keizer schools will roll out pouches to lock up student phones
McKay High School has implemented a new cellphone ban this school year, limiting phone use from the start of classes until the final bell at 3:20 p.m. Early results show increased student engagement, fewer fights, and improved social interaction. The Salem-Keizer School District is expanding this effort by rolling out Yondr phone pouches at six schools, including McKay, Sprague, and several middle schools, between November and January. The pouches lock students' phones during the day to reduce distractions and anxiety tied to social media use. District officials aim to enhance safety, noting that fewer phones during lockdowns have helped prevent misinformation and panic. Parents can still reach students through school offices, and the pouches can be unlocked in emergencies. The district plans to monitor feedback and may expand the program based on results.
