Salem Housing Authority Updates (October 14, 2024)
The Salem Housing Authority is involved in a project with Gusy Bill Apartments, where they will serve as a special limited partner. This project includes 119 affordable housing units at a rate of 30-60% of the area median income, contributing to Salem's effort to increase affordable housing. The Yona Hall project, focused on historic preservation and community impact, received national recognition, marking the first time a housing authority has won such an award.
Marion County has launched a new 24/7 civilian crisis response team to address mental health crises without police involvement. This team, operational since January, pairs mental health workers with addiction recovery mentors to de-escalate situations and connect people to services. Calls can be made through the 988 hotline, the Behavioral Health Crisis Center, or local service providers. While replacing previous police-led crisis teams, the new model has seen fewer calls, with 90 incidents handled in six months compared to 554 by the sheriff’s office team last year. Most calls involve mental health issues, including suicide concerns, and are resolved through de-escalation and referrals to services. The shift reflects a statewide trend favoring non-police crisis response, with the team operating across Salem and Marion County. Despite the challenges, officials aim to raise awareness about the new service and continue refining the system to provide faster and more effective crisis intervention. (Salem Reporter)
Shari’s Restaurants abruptly closed all Oregon locations over the weekend, citing severe financial issues, including eviction notices, unpaid bills, and back taxes. The Beaverton-based chain, known for its pies and family-style dining, had faced mounting debt and supply shortages in recent months. Some employees resorted to grocery store trips to keep operations running. The closures are part of a larger trend, with nearly a dozen locations across Oregon, Idaho, and Washington shutting down in the past six months. Shari’s, which first opened in Hermiston in 1978, struggled to recover from the pandemic's impact. It remains unclear if any locations outside Oregon are still operational, as management has not responded to inquiries. (KGW8)
