Oregon Guardsman Tops World Burpee Record

Maj. Tommy Vu of the Oregon Army National Guard reclaimed his world record for the most chest-to-ground burpees completed in one hour, achieving 1,027 repetitions on October 5. This surpassed his previous record of 1,003 set in March 2023, following a loss of the title in December 2023 when another athlete completed 1,010 burpees. Vu attributes his success to a rigorous training regimen developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, with support from his family and friends. The attempt took place at a Salem gym and is pending validation from Guinness World Records. Vu also plans to donate $1,027—one dollar per burpee—to support a friend battling ALS, and he’s already eyeing longer burpee records as his next challenge. (National Guard)

The Boys & Girls Club of Salem is hosting a Holiday Gift Drive to bring joy to local kids and families this holiday season. Community members can support the drive in various ways, such as making a donation to provide gifts and essentials, shopping for a child using a wish list, or organizing a giving tree or donation drive at a workplace. Early involvement helps the club reach more families, ensuring a brighter holiday for those in need. (BGC Salem)

The City of Salem is moving forward with a nearly $40 million seismic retrofit of the Civic Center, which will require relocating 166 employees for over a year starting in summer 2025. Howard S. Wright, the contractor previously involved in the Salem Public Library and public works building projects, will lead the renovation. The project includes structural upgrades, interior renovations, roof and window replacements, parking garage repairs, and improvements to Peace Plaza. Funded by a 2022 infrastructure bond, the work aims to enhance safety and preserve the historic character of the 50-year-old building, which is expected to be ready for staff to return by late 2026 or early 2027. Englewood Elementary School in north-central Salem suffered over $10,000 in damage after a break-in over the weekend. Vandalism included graffiti, shattered glass, and items stolen or damaged throughout hallways, classrooms, and the library. The incident was reported to police on Sunday afternoon by a school employee. Teachers discovered the damage on Monday morning, prompting a delayed start to classes at 10:20 a.m. to allow time for inventory and clean-up. The Salem-Keizer School District and police are investigating the break-in, but no suspect has been identified. (Salem Reporter)
