Oregon’s FirstHome Program Expands Pathways to Affordable Homeownership
Oregon Housing and Community Services is making homeownership more achievable for low- and moderate-income families through its FirstHome program. Tailored for first-time buyers, FirstHome provides competitive interest rates and down payment assistance covering either 4% or 5% of the first mortgage loan amount. With additional support for closing costs and special benefits for veterans, the program is opening doors to homeownership across Oregon..

Salem’s new all-electric street sweeper has been officially named Z.E.U.S. (Zero Emission Utility Sweeper) thanks to a suggestion by 8th-grader Zaidee, whose idea won over 1,300 votes. Funded by grants from the DEQ’s Oregon Clean Fuels Program and PGE’s Drive Change Fund, Z.E.U.S. operates quietly with zero emissions and is designed for narrow spaces like alleys and bike paths. The sweeper will debut in December as part of Salem’s commitment to sustainability. (City of Salem Facebook)
A West Salem High School instructional assistant is on paid administrative leave following a fight with a student during lunch on Monday. Principal Carlos Ruiz informed families of the incident, stating staff intervened to de-escalate the situation and that the school is working with those involved. The Salem-Keizer School District is investigating the altercation, and Salem police, while notified, are not treating the fight as a criminal matter. No additional details have been provided due to the ongoing investigation. (Salem Reporter)
