Salem Mayoral Candidates Face Off in Lively Debate

Salem mayoral candidates Julie Hoy and Chris Hoy (no relation) participated in a spirited debate, discussing some of the most pressing issues facing the city. The event gave Salem residents a chance to hear the candidates' positions on topics ranging from budget challenges to homelessness and public safety.

Budget and Revenue: Differences Emerge

One of the key points of contention during the debate was the recent payroll tax vote and Salem's ongoing budget challenges. Chris Hoy, who supported the payroll tax, said, "I supported the payroll tax, and that was a lot of political capital that I expended because I wanted to support police. That was a huge thing." Julie Hoy, on the other hand, opposed the tax, stating, "I heard that the city is the people of the city are tired of having money taken from them and not seeing results."

When asked about potential new revenue sources, Chris expressed openness to options like a public safety levy, while Julie mentioned exploring the creation of a special library district to secure dedicated funding without pitting it against police and fire services.

Tackling Homelessness and Crime

Both candidates acknowledged the urgency of addressing Salem's homelessness crisis. Chris highlighted his support for macro-shelter communities and the navigation center, calling them "critical in addressing our homeless situation." Julie emphasized the need to collaborate with the county to tackle the root causes of homelessness, such as addiction and mental health issues.

Gun violence was another hot topic, with Chris calling for a community-wide conversation and response. "It's going to take an entire community response to address the situation that's not going to come just from the city," he said. Julie, meanwhile, advocated for immediate action and suggested community involvement to improve safety near parks.

Looking to the Future

The candidates also discussed their plans for police and fire staffing, as well as Salem's Climate Action Plan. Chris noted his efforts to propose additional police officer positions and his support for maintaining the city's climate action work. Julie stressed the importance of dealing with the root problems to reduce the workload on first responders and expressed her willingness to learn more about how the city can best serve the community regarding climate action.

As the debate drew to a close, both candidates pledged to collaborate with the community to solve Salem's most pressing challenges if elected mayor. With the election just around the corner, Salem residents will soon have the opportunity to make their voices heard and shape the future of their city.
