Willamette Valley snow possible over weekend and into next week

A cold and active weather pattern is set to return to Oregon this weekend, bringing rain, low-elevation snow, and potentially icy conditions into early February. Snow levels could drop to near the Willamette Valley floor, with heavier snowfall expected in the Cascades and Coast Range, while long-range forecasts suggest colder-than-normal temperatures and the potential for more valley snow next week. High School Rugby Registration Opens

The Salem Snapping Turtles, the local high school girls’ rugby team, are recruiting for the spring season! Open to all high schoolers in the district, this no-cut team welcomes new players to join or try out a practice. After a strong fall season, finishing in the top four statewide with a mostly rookie roster, they’re looking to build on that success.

Original Bo & Vine downtown to close

Bo & Vine Burger Bar's original downtown Salem location will close after Friday, January 31st with operations merging into its newer South Salem restaurant. Owners say the move strengthens the chain’s future, ensuring its staff transitions to the larger location at 3969 Commercial St. SE. (Statesman Journal)

Government

City Council budget updates

Salem City Council advanced new airport fees to help close a budget shortfall, proposing landing and overnight parking fees for aircraft over 7,000 pounds, expected to generate up to $100,000 annually. Councilors also tabled a decision on extending city services to Siletz tribal land amid concerns from the Grand Ronde Tribe, allocated $1.4 million for Geer Park Skatepark improvements, and approved sidewalk upgrades funded by an ODOT Safe Routes to School grant. New committee of executives combing through Salem’s city budget

Salem’s new budget efficiencies committee, composed of nine local professionals with experience in finance, real estate, and strategic planning, will analyze the city's budget over the next two weeks to help address a nearly $14 million shortfall. The committee, formed with input from city leaders and business organizations, will meet publicly four times before presenting its findings to the Salem City Council.
