CTEC Launches Innovative Behavioral Health and Human Services Program

This is a Game-Changing Opportunity for High School Students Salem-Keizer's Career Technical Education Center (CTEC) is introducing a groundbreaking Behavioral Health and Human Services (BHHS) program designed to equip high school juniors and seniors with invaluable skills and practical experience in this crucial field.

The first program of its kind, taught by Licensed Clinical Social Workers and a dedicated high school teacher, promises to be a transformative experience for students.

A Comprehensive Curriculum Covering Essential Topics

The BHHS program offers a well-rounded education, combining academic courses with hands-on skill development. Students will delve into fundamental areas such as trauma-informed care, cultural competency, and self-care practices. They'll also have the chance to explore various systems and settings within the field, interact with industry professionals, and gain insights into potential career paths. The program emphasizes the bio-psycho-social perspective, ensuring that students acquire assessment skills, learn strengths-based approaches, and understand treatment planning.

In addition to the core BHHS courses, the program integrates English and Social Studies classes that offer students the opportunity to earn college credits. These courses focus on developing critical communication and literacy skills essential for success in professional settings and post-secondary education. Students can earn credit for English 11 or 12 Honors, as well as Psychology 201, 202, and Communications 111 through Willamette Promise, giving them a head start on their college education.

Practical Experience and Valuable Certifications

One of the program's standout features is its commitment to real-world experience. Second-year students will have the opportunity to work within the Salem-Keizer School District, applying their newly acquired skills in authentic settings. They'll also participate in skill-lab based learning and reflective clinical supervision under the guidance of Licensed Clinical Social Workers. This hands-on approach allows students to refine their skills, build confidence, and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and rewards of working in the behavioral health field.

Upon completion of the program, students will earn sought-after certifications, including Mental Health First Aid, Youth Mental Health First Aid, and Trauma-Informed Care Trainings, giving them a significant advantage in their future endeavors. These certifications demonstrate their commitment to the field and their readiness to tackle real-world challenges. Additionally, students will graduate with a professional portfolio showcasing their case studies and clinical experiences, serving as a testament to their skills and knowledge.

Empowering the Next Generation of Behavioral Health Professionals

The BHHS program at CTEC is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of students and the communities they will serve. By providing a solid foundation in behavioral health and human services, this program empowers the next generation of professionals to make a positive difference in the world. Graduates of the program will be well-equipped to pursue various career paths within the field, including roles in mental health agencies, social service organizations, schools, hospitals, and community outreach programs.

As the demand for skilled behavioral health professionals continues to grow, the BHHS program at CTEC is positioning itself as a catalyst for change. By investing in the education and training of high school students, the program is taking proactive steps to address the workforce shortage and ensure that communities have access to the support and resources they need.
