What Happened Last Week in Salem?

Mayor Hoy’s eight years of service have been marked by transformative leadership and resilience. First elected in 2018, he guided Salem through crises like a water emergency, the pandemic, and wildfires while prioritizing long-term solutions. Hoy championed efforts to address homelessness, creating the Navigation Center and micro-shelter villages, and oversaw the Community Safety Bond to fund parks and public safety improvements. Under his leadership, downtown Salem was revitalized, becoming a vibrant hub for residents and visitors. Reflecting on his tenure, Hoy said, “This work has been the privilege of my life.”

A cougar has been spotted in the conservation area of Minto-Brown Island Park, with additional unconfirmed sightings reported nearby. Wildlife experts advise park visitors to remain cautious, especially at dawn and dusk when cougars are most active. City staff are monitoring the situation in consultation with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Park visitors should stay aware, follow park rules, and avoid visiting after dark, as most sightings have occurred during these hours. (City of Salem) 

A new affordable housing development in northeast Salem, Gussie Belle Commons, has secured a $24.2 million state-backed loan to fast-track construction. This funding is part of a $45 million project by Home First Development and Green Light Development, supported by state grants and tax credits. Once completed in late 2026, the 180-unit complex will provide housing for up to 500 residents, prioritizing those earning 60% or less of Marion County’s median income, with 24 units reserved for households earning 30% or less. Featuring green spaces, EV charging stations, and potential daycare facilities, the project reflects a community-focused effort to address Salem’s affordable housing crisis. (Salem Reporter)
