Oregon’s FirstHome Program Expands Pathways to Affordable Homeownership
Oregon Housing and Community Services is making homeownership more achievable for low- and moderate-income families through its FirstHome program. Tailored for first-time buyers, FirstHome provides competitive interest rates and down payment assistance covering either 4% or 5% of the first mortgage loan amount. With additional support for closing costs and special benefits for veterans, the program is opening doors to homeownership across Oregon.
With additional support for closing costs and special benefits for veterans, this program is opening doors to home ownership across Oregon.
There is no extra money to cover closing costs outside of the DPA funds. There is a one-time veterans exemption That allows a non-veteran first-time home buyer the ability to take advantage of this program.

Volunteers are needed to make the Annual Downtown Salem Holiday Parade on November 29th a success. The Salem Main Street Association and Downtown Salem Holiday Parade Committee invite you to contribute your time and talents on parade day to bring holiday cheer to the community. There are also opportunities to help brighten up downtown with holiday lights in the weeks leading up to the parade, with volunteer shifts available from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on November 3rd, 9th, 16th, and 23rd. Your dedication makes this beloved holiday tradition possible, and we can't wait to celebrate with you! (Salem Main Street Association)
The City of Salem is in the final phase of its Electric Street Sweeper Naming Contest, and you can help decide the winning name for the new eSwingo 200+ EV Sweeper. This fully electric, zero-emissions sweeper is designed to clean narrow spaces like park trails, bike paths, and alleys, with a 10-hour operating time and minimal noise. The sweeper was funded by a $337,443 grant from the PGE Drive Change Fund as part of the DEQ's Oregon Clean Fuels Program. After receiving over 460 name suggestions from the community, the top five are now up for a final vote. Voting closes on November 15, 2024, so cast your vote to help shape Salem’s streetscape! The historic Cooke Stationery building, constructed around 1880, is undergoing a transformative remodel led by Salem developer Kevin Harrison, aiming to blend its rich past with the evolving needs of downtown. Purchased in July 2023 through Cook Building LLC after the closure of the long-time office supply store, the building will house two retail storefronts and four apartments. Harrison plans to restore historical touches, including original brick walls and vintage details, while ensuring structural integrity with extensive renovations, such as redoing the roof. Broker Conrad Venti describes the upstairs, last occupied in the mid-20th century, as a "time capsule," featuring red carpet, hardwood floors, and tall windows. Harrison, a lifelong Salem resident, sees the project as a chance to enhance downtown’s walkability for future residents while revitalizing a historic gem. The retail spaces are expected to draw interest, particularly from restaurants, adding vibrancy to the area as downtown Salem experiences a surge in multifamily developments and community activity.
