The City of Salem is inviting residents to help name its new fully electric compact street sweeper, the eSwingo 200+ EV, which will be used to clean narrow spaces like park trails and bike paths. The sweeper, funded by a $337,443 grant from DEQ’s Oregon Clean Fuels Program and PGE’s Drive Change Fund, supports the city’s Climate Action Plan to transition all vehicles to electric. The sweeper is 100% electric, operates for 10 hours, and produces zero carbon emissions. (City of Salem)

Intensive kids’ mental health treatment program opens north of Salem

Salem-Keizer School District and Trillium, a Portland-based mental health provider, have opened the Meadowlark Day Program at the former Eldriedge Elementary School in Keizer. The program offers intensive mental health treatment for students, addressing a gap in local resources that often leaves children on lengthy waitlists or struggling with inadequate outpatient care. Meadowlark serves students from Salem-Keizer and surrounding districts, providing therapy, medication management, and social skills practice. While the program is not a traditional school, it offers lessons to help students stay on track academically. The facility can treat about 100 students annually, with 11 students currently enrolled and 11 more on the waiting list. Meadowlark is part of a larger effort to improve student mental health services and reduce pressure on school resources. (Salem Reporter)

Joys of Living enlist inmates in Oregon to train service dogs

Founded in 2004, Joys of Living Assistance Dogs (JLAD) uses adults in custody (AICs) to help train service dogs for recipients. The inmates work closely with the dogs day and night, teaching them nearly 100 cues over a training period of 18 months to 2 years, starting from the puppies' birth. The program has had a transformative impact on the AICs as well, with one participant sharing that working with the dogs has taught valuable lessons in communication, empathy, patience, and self-control. The program continues to positively affect both the community and the inmates involved. (Statesman Journal)
