Several streets near downtown Salem were closed Wednesday morning after a train collided with a pedestrian at 12th Street SE and Marion Street NE around 7:00AM, Salem Police said. Salem responds to news of emerald ash borer infestation in Marion County

Salem is preparing for the arrival of the emerald ash borer, a highly destructive tree pest, by enacting a management plan to slow its spread and protect the city's tree canopy. The emerald ash borer, recently detected in Marion, Yamhill, and Clackamas counties, has already devastated ash trees in other states. Salem's Urban Forester, Milan Davis, stated that the city is collaborating with state agencies to implement preservation strategies starting this spring, while Marion County is now under a quarantine restricting the movement of certain tree materials.
