🌮 What happened this week in Salem? 9/29

Thank you to the 1,167 new subscribers we added since last week!

It means a ton and I love seeing the comments we get as well.

This week someone told me our IG page is the GO TO source of information about what is going where. This is huge! We are just getting started.

We need an unformed community. That’s the mission behind this business we are building.

Would love to hear from you:

  • What is something you love about our newsletter, podcast and Instagram page?

  • What is something you think we can do better or different?

One of our big focuses heading into the next few months is putting together live and virtual events. We are finalizing details with sponsors and will be making announcements soon.

Appreciate the love this city is showing us! Let’s keep building!

Okay, now let’s see What’s Happening Salem…

Salem Mayor Chris Hoy declared September 17, 2024 as National Voter Registration Day in Salem to "honor civic unity and an opportunity to set aside differences, enjoy the rights and opportunities we all share as Americans and celebrate our democracy.  He presented the proclamation to Alice LaViolette and other representatives of the League of Women Voters. Keizer advances deal to sell land to Canadian firm

The Keizer City Council is progressing with a plan to grant Cordelio, a Canadian power company, an option to purchase nearly seven acres of land north of the Bonneville Power Administration station in Keizer. The council approved an option deal on August 19, where Cordelio would pay $125,000 over five years to evaluate a renewable energy project. If all environmental checks are favorable after the five-year period, the company could proceed with the full purchase for $872,500 and begin building a power storage facility on the land located on Tepper Lane. The land was valued at $610,000 in 2021. (Keizer Times)

Oregon economists predict nearly $1 billion kicker tax credit in 2026

Oregon's latest revenue forecast suggests that taxpayers could receive a nearly $1 billion kicker in 2026, significantly higher than the previous estimate of $582 million. This comes as the state continues to see revenues exceed expectations, driven by strong personal and corporate income tax collections. The forecast presented to state lawmakers shows a stable economic outlook, though concerns remain about a slowing labor market and potential inflationary pressures. (Statesman Journal)

Passing train strikes, kills man on tracks

Salem Police responded to a fatal incident on the Union Pacific line near the 1200 block of D Street NE, where a man was struck by a northbound freight train around 4:50PM on Monday, August 26. Witnesses reported that the man, identified as a 32-year-old Salem resident, laid down on the tracks just before the train passed. The rail line was closed between D Street NE and Mill Street SE for about three hours during the investigation. The train was cleared to proceed just before 8:00PM (Salem Police Department)

The next chapter in Oregon’s fight against fentanyl starts next week

Marion County is expanding its existing Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) program as part of Oregon’s new initiative to address fentanyl overdoses. The county’s approach builds on the LEAD program, which already diverts individuals away from jail for low-level crimes like vandalism and instead offers treatment and support services. This expansion aligns with the broader goals of House Bill 4002, which aims to prioritize recovery over incarceration for those caught with small amounts of drugs. Marion County’s program will continue to focus on helping individuals move away from drugs while avoiding criminal charges. (Salem Reporter)
