Cherriots transit drivers in Salem faced a sharp rise in assaults, with incidents more than doubling from 8 to 22 between April and June, totaling 55 reported assaults this year. This includes threats, physical attacks, and encounters with firearms. (Salem Reporter)

Oregon Department of Corrections’ push to build a new state penitentiary

Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC) leaders are urging state lawmakers to prioritize the construction of a new state prison and assess the costs to repair or replace the aging Oregon State Penitentiary (OSP) in Salem. DOC Director Mike Reese, who recently toured all DOC facilities, described OSP as "oppressive" and beyond repair, estimating a $624 million cost for a new facility, which could take 5-10 years to complete. The alternative involves over $110 million in deferred maintenance and additional necessary upgrades at the current facility. (KGW8)

The Oregon State Hospital will allow visitors again, but most will only be permitted no-contact visits. This comes after the facility closed in May following a patient’s suspected fentanyl overdose, allegedly smuggled by a visitor. Under new guidelines, visitors will be screened and separated by clear partitions from patients. Minors are not allowed during this initial phase. The hospital is implementing these measures to prevent contraband while addressing recent federal deficiencies and ensuring safety. Advocates argue that no-contact visits can negatively impact patients and their families. (Oregon Public Broadcast)

Oregon’s high-need schools will receive $11.5 million from the U.S. Department of Education next year, with a potential total of up to $57 million over five years, to enhance literacy instruction. This funding supports the Early Literacy Success Initiative, which was backed by a $120 million state investment in 2023. The funds will aid in teacher development, hiring reading specialists, and purchasing new curricula, with priority given to schools serving historically underserved students. Oregon's grant is the second largest among 23 states, following New Mexico. (Salem Reporter)
