One year in, Avelo has received $446k from grant to subsidize Salem operations
Over 55,000 passengers have used Salem airport since Avelo Airlines reintroduced commercial air service in October 2023. Supported by $2 million in city-funded renovations and equipment upgrades, the airport received additional federal and private grants for minimum revenue guarantees. In its first year, Avelo has drawn $446,000 of the $1.2 million set aside to support ticket sales below target. Nearly half of early passengers were visitors, benefiting local tourism and economic development. The airline plans to maintain and potentially expand services, with talks underway for new routes, despite cutting a Sonoma route in September due to low demand. (Salem Reporter)
Community Development Partners recently hosted an open house for Mahonia Crossing, a new affordable housing community in south Salem aimed at addressing high rental costs for seniors and families. The $115 million project features 313 units across 18 buildings, offering intergenerational living with amenities like a community building, garden beds, and play areas. Targeted at households earning 30% to 80% of the area median income, it prioritizes applicants such as wildfire victims and agricultural workers. Nonprofit EngAGE Northwest provides on-site support services, connecting residents with resources for food, rent assistance, and more. Mahonia Crossing, named after developer Wildwood/Mahonia, emphasizes community building and sustainable living. (Statesman Journal)
